Preparing wild rice is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. For beginners, get to know these quick tips before selecting your cooking method below:

- Time it out. Uncooked wild rice can take anywhere from 30-50 minutes. It’s important not to overcook!
- Get the right ratio. Start out by combining 1-part wild rice to 3-parts liquid. You can use water or broth.
- Put a lid on it. Make sure your pot or rice cooker has a cover. While it simmers, you may want to stir it a few times to make sure your rice isn’t sticking to the bottom.
- Take a look. You’ll be able to see when your wild rice is getting close. The kernels will look tender and may even start to burst open. In perfectly cooked wild rice, you’ll be able to spot the cream-colored center.
On the Stove
The best stove top cooking method is to bring three cups of water to a boil and then stir in one cup of rice. Reduce the heat and let the pot simmer while being covered for 40-45 minutes.
Make sure to fluff the rice with a fork about five minutes before it is finished cooking. Also, make sure to drain any excess liquid that might have remained.
In the Oven
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a baking pan, pour three cups of water over one cup of wild rice. Cover the rice with aluminum foil and bake for one hour. Make sure to fluff the rice with a fork about halfway through. After the hour is up, drain any excess liquid and fluff with a fork again to taste.
Rice Cooker Method
A rice cooker may offer the most convenient way to cook wild rice. Rub the cooker pan with butter or nonstick cooking spray. Add two cups of water with one cup of wild rice. Cook 50 minutes or until the rice is fluffy and tender. Let it stand for another 10 minutes and enjoy.
Microwaving your wild rice won’t offer up the same great taste as cooking it on the stovetop, oven or rice cooker. But if you’re in a hurry, this is an easy option. In a microwave-safe bowl, add one cup of wild rice and three cups of water. Cover and microwave it on high for five minutes. After that, microwave the rice on medium for 30 more minutes. When the time is up, let the rice stand for 10 minutes and drain any excess liquid. Fluff it with a fork and season to taste.
