Steak sandwiches are super easy to make, yet also such a treat. Those satisfying slivers of carefully cooked meat, encased in your favourite bread (I find that a white sourdough or ciabatta works particularly well!) makes for a combination that can be the ultimate in simple indulgence.

Whether you’re planning an informal weekend dinner for your nearest and dearest or serving them up for a special occasion, there are plenty of options when it comes to side dishes that will transform your sandwich into a filling meal.

1. Sticky caramelised onions

Caramelised onions are the ultimate pairing for a steak sandwich, and they’re really easy to make at home.

Just slice up two onions, and simmer in a pan with a pinch of salt for around 30 minutes, or until soft and golden. Make sure that you stir the onions occasionally so they don’t catch on the bottom of the pan.

Next, add a tablespoon of soft brown sugar and a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar, and cook over a low heat for a further five minutes. The sugar should be dissolved, and the vinegar should be reduced.

It’s a worth making a little extra so you have some leftovers. Caramelised onions also work really well when served with burgers, cheese toasties, ploughman’s platters, and sausage rolls.

2. Rocket salad

The peppery flavour of rockets lends itself really well to be served with steak, and it adds a pleasing splash of colour to your meal whilst keeping things vibrant and fresh.

You can of course simply add some rocket leaves to your sandwich, though you might want to try something a little different if you really want to wow your dinner guests.

Create a zingy dressing by mixing a teaspoon of Dijon mustard, a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar, two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, and a tablespoon of chopped fresh tarragon. When ready to serve, drizzle it over your rocket.


3. Fresh sliced tomatoes

Sometimes, the simplest side dishes really are the very best.

Try to find a variety of tomatoes that are in season right now, or better still, grow your own in a greenhouse.

This makes such a massive difference to the taste, and can be the difference between a lacklustre accompaniment and one that really makes your meal sing.

Once you’ve got your hands on the best tomatoes you can find, serve them sliced, drizzled with a little olive oil, and season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.

4. Chips

When you’re going to the effort of cooking and preparing a premium cut of meat, it makes sense to ensure you don’t cut any corners when it comes to your side dishes. Now isn’t the time for bog standard oven chips!

Making restaurant quality chips at home doesn’t have to be difficult, and you don’t even need a deep fat fryer.

You’ve got several choices here, and you keep things as simple as you like.

A stilton, apple, and walnut salad has plenty of satisfying crunch.

Alternatively, a warm stilton salad with streaky bacon is perfect for those early autumn days when the weather is just starting to get that little bit cooler.

6. Onion rings

A crunchy onion ring is a great side dish to serve communally in the middle of the table, allowing your guests to help themselves.

For a healthier option than deep fat frying, make your own onion rings by dipping sliced onion in egg and then panic breadcrumbs, and bake in the oven.

Asparagus has a whole host of nutritional benefits and a well deserved reputation as a superfood.

It’s high in fibre, low in fat and calories, and packed with antioxidants.

When it comes to what to serve with steak sandwiches, keep your asparagus simple. Gently roast in the oven and drizzle with a little olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon juice. To really lift the flavour, add some shavings of parmesan cheese.

If you haven’t yet tried Marmite roasties, I really can’t recommend them highly enough. The yeast extract helps to create those crispy bits, and adds a beautiful deep golden colour as well as a rich, savoury taste.

If you’re not a Marmite lover, that doesn’t have to be too much of an issue. The Marmite taste isn’t particularly strong as you’ll just be using a very small amount. In fact, it’s likely that your guests might not even guess what your secret ingredient is!

9. Crisps

If you want a mega easy option for what to serve with steak sandwiches, crisps are a great contender.

Just pop open a bag, and you’re ready to go!

In this instance, a good quality ready salted crisp will be your best option. After all, your crisps are a side dish rather than the main event, and all you need is a salty crunch.

10. Horseradish sauce

Traditionally, horseradish is teamed with fattier cuts of beef, because the strong flavour cuts through the richness of the beef and makes it lighter and easier to eat. Some also say that horseradish aids digestion, making it a wise accompaniment for an indulgent meal.

All this aside though, it’s just absolutely delicious when smothered on a steak sandwich!

If horseradish root is out of season, you might have to stick with a jar from a supermarket.

If you can find some though, it’s well worth trying to make your own.
