How To Make Bang Bang Shrimp

We’re going to separate the shrimp and the sauce recipes. You’ll need about a pound of medium shrimp that have been peeled and deveined. Also grab some buttermilk, cornstarch, and vegetable oil.

Using a Dutch oven, heat about two inches of oil to 375 degrees. I suggest using a thermometer if you have one handy.

While you’re waiting for the oil to heat up, combine the shrimp and buttermilk in a bowl, and add the cornstarch in a separate zip top bag. Remove the shrimp from the bowl and shake off any excess butter milk. Then place them in the bag with the cornstarch. Next, shake the bag up to coat thoroughly. Then, remove the shrimp.

Fry the shrimp in batches; about one minute on each side. When they come out of the Dutch oven, place them on a paper towel-lined plate.

For the Sauce

For this tangy, yummy sauce, simply mix up mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, and Sriracha in a bowl. You can cover the bowl and place it in the fridge while you cook the shrimp too if you’d like. When the shrimp are done, drizzle the sauce on top or toss them to coat. You don’t have to use all the sauce on the first go. I also like to reserve it for dipping! You can also sprinkle the shrimp with chives for some added flavor and color.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Should I Serve With It? You are perfectly fine to eat on their own, I could eat a million! However, they are also great served on a bed of lettuce or on top of white or jasmine rice. It is also mighty tasty in pasta, tacos, or even quesadillas!

Why should I use cornstarch instead of flour? Cornstarch produces a very crisp and crunchy texture. It also provides a very even, thin coating, while flour tends to be give a thicker and denser coating.

Can I Bake the shrimp instead of frying? I like frying as it tastes just like the Bonefish Grill version. But, baking is definitely an option for those who may wish to opt for a healthier version. Simply preheat an oven to 400 degrees and bake for 5-7 minutes. For baking use a wash of egg whites, then corn starch, and finally coat in Panko bread crumbs.

What Is sweet chili sauce And where can I find it? Sweet chili sauce is usually made with red chile peppers, rice wine vinegar, garlic, fish sauce, and a sweetener. It can be found in most grocery stores in the ethnic aisle. You can also make it yourself at home! I like this version from Budget Bytes.
